Senior Research Engineer I - Glass Fiber

Position Description

Job Summary

The senior research engineer is expected to be an expert in the fields of fibers, fiber interface, and fiberizing process for glass fiber insulation products. He/she will use fundamental scientific and engineering knowledge to lead projects for plant support, product performance improvement, and new product development. He/she will mainly work for the insulation business but will also support two other businesses working with glass fibers: Architectural Solutions and Gypsum.

This role includes the following activities:

  • Develop fundamental and practical expertise in fibers, fiber interface and fiberizing process for insulation products. 
  • Provide expertise around fiberizing and fibers to support plants on any issue related to insulation products manufacturing
  • Work with plants to improve fiberizing efficiency
  • Use data science tools and methods to analyze plant processes and quality data. Then, use those results to give recommendations to plant teams to improve product quality or process efficiency
  • Collaborate with the product management team to develop a new product book of specifications
  • Organize trials for new product development: define trial objectives, organize trials, collect and analyze data, summarize results in a report …
  • Organize and follow measurements for product qualification with 3rd party labs
  • Follow and ensure product compliance with US and international standards
  • Support to IP team: follow and analyze competitors' IP
  • Provide expertise and support to any fiber-related issue to the Gypsum and Architectural solution business

Competencies:

  • High technical and scientific knowledge in the scope of work with a focus on materials, process techniques, and product improvement or development
  • Demonstrated good knowledge and adherence to Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements
  • Ability to manage and document projects effectively 
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) with ability to communicate technical information

 


Required Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry-level PhD in Material Science or Organic/Inorganic Chemical Engineering.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with manufacturing processes/equipment in an industrial or research setting
