Senior Research Engineer I - Process Technology

Position Description

Job Summary

Saint-Gobain Research North America is looking for talented, and energetic research engineer to join our Processes Technology Group. The Group works closely with all Saint-Gobain business units to develop new products or processes and support current manufacturing processes.

We are searching for a candidate that can quickly understand new technology areas, is a hands-on project leader and will investigate, research, and develop new technologies that strengthen our offerings. The new team member will have the opportunity to leverage their engineering and materials expertise by leading their projects from the initial stages of conceptualization, prototyping and experimental testing, to the implementation in manufacturing. Projects will focus on process and product development activities and follow a Gate-based methodology with a focus in design/change control.

ROLE SUMMARY

The selected candidate will be expected to lead R&D projects through effective collaboration with R&D colleagues, commercial team members, application engineers, external customers, and external suppliers. The candidate will create and execute project plans, design and conduct experiments, analyze data and present findings in written and oral formats.  The ability to communicate across all levels of the organization will be important part of this role

The candidate will be expected to work on projects in the areas of product, process and equipment design, assessment of design with simulation, which includes:

  • Provide R&D support to multiple businesses over a wide range of mixing processes including liquid blending, slurry mixing and powder mixing
  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on support for all aspects of a mixing operation, including, raw materials delivery systems, mixer design, retrofitting existing equipment, quality monitoring & pumping to downstream processes
  • Develop and implement strategies for scale up of formulations from lab to pilot to production environment
  • Assist in the specification, procurement and qualification of mixing, pumping quality monitoring tools and equipment
  • Establish baseline parameters to allow integration of new mixing methodologies into existing processes
  • Collect and analyze process data to drive decision making
  • Understand the effects of mixing and coating process changes upon product quality attributes and performance
  • Manages projects from inception through scale-up. Manages multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget. Able to balance creativity with process and documentation.

 COMPETENCIES:

  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to demonstration of hands-on new product and/or process development, familiarity with modeling and simulation tools, statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation, IP, Patents, and technical documents.
  • Confident, independently motivated self-starter.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to quickly understand new concepts and technology and apply them.
  • Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment required.
  • Demonstrate adequate knowledge in HSE.

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD degree in polymer science, polymer processing, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or other related disciplines
  • Background in mixing, flow and process monitoring technologies supporting multiple downstream processes including coatings, extrusion, milling, molding, sintering etc. preferred.
  • Experience with mixing theory, equipment, pump selections & process monitoring tools preferred
  • Experience with execution of experimental designs (DOE) in a manufacturing environment is a plus
  • Experience transitioning new processes and products to manufacturing is a plus
