Senior Research Engineer II - Material and Formulation - Gypsum R&D

Position Description

Job Summary

CertainTeed is looking for talented, and energetic engineers to join our team working on projects that focus on development of new products for CertainTeed Gypsum’s plasterboard products.  As a Senior Research & Development engineer, the candidate will enhance the fundamental understanding of raw material and formulation in order to optimize product performance regarding mechanical, fire, acoustic and moisture resistance. The candidate will also support project focused on sustainability from raw material alternatives to process innovation.

Under the direction of the material and formulation R&D manager, the candidate will acquire a sound knowledge of lab formulation and testing, and all aspects relating to industrial manufacture of plasterboards at plants. In addition to designing experiments for the candidate’s primary projects, the candidate will be expected to manage projects with various stakeholder within Saint-Gobain group.


  • Utilizes sound technical knowledge of materials, formulation, processes, techniques, and products to improve on product performance to reduce costs, to maximize production, and to support new knowledge research.
  • Leads project on sustainability related to new raw material, alternative gypsum supply and also specific high added value products like fire, acoustic and moisture resistant boards.
  • Developed custom test methods, implements new equipment, new test capability for the company/business.
  • Works efficiently with Malvern Innovation Center (MIC), SGR-North America(SGR-NA), Gypsum Process Innovation (GPI), and other R&D resources to identify and develop practical solutions for CertainTeed gypsum processes.
  • Utilizes broad technical background and experience to develop and/or improve products, processes, and performance and/or reduce costs within a major product area.
  • Continuously evaluates workplace for safety concerns and ensures behavioral safety initiatives are performed to goal levels.
  • Coordinates work with external suppliers, universities, institutes and contract laboratories.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget to meet business and customer objectives.
  • Summarizes project approaches and results in concise and accurate technical memos/reports.
  • Communicates project strategies and results to internal customers and management through formal presentations.
  • Conducts research and development process improvements related to the production of Gypsum Wall Board
  • Actively research technical literature, prior art, and patents, and seek out potential intellectual property opportunities in collaboration with legal team.


  • Able to communicate technically with internal competencies and university collaborators and utilize knowledge to advance projects and identify productive synergies.
  • Must be proficient with managing lab resources including direct and/or indirect report and raw material, equipment, safety, 5S and other.
  • Project leadership and management, team collaboration, and strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with statistical tools and programming, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation (Minitab, Python).
  • Proven ability to think critically, strategize and organize tasks autonomously on assigned projects, and establish viable technical and scientific paths forward.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate with all levels of management, customers, colleagues, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated good knowledge in HSE and IP.
  • Develop understanding of company policies and corporate structure.

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 12+ years' experience, or Master’s degree 7+ years’ experience or PhD 3+ years’ experience in material science, organic-inorganic chemistry or related fields.
  • Must have hands-on experience with developing new custom test capability for the company/business and Capex management (3D design, fabrication, installation) and analytical equipment.
  • Experience in chemistry and soft matter physics (polymer: starch, silicone oil), foam, suspension of particles, interfaces).
  • Experience in analytical equipment, rheology or porous material characterization is a plus.
  • Previous R&D project management and manufacturing experience is a plus.
  • Up to 30% travel may be required, subject to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions.
