R&D Manager, PCR North America

Position Description

Job Summary

Saint-Gobain’s North American R&D center is looking for talented and experienced researchers to join our Performance Ceramics and Refractories (PCR) business, pioneering ceramic solutions for extreme industrial applications and a greener world.  As the R&D manager for PCR North America, you will conduct research developing improved technical understanding of our processes and products and define strategic research orientations in a rapidly changing world. You will manage an ambitious portfolio of projects, interact with key technical and business stakeholders, both internally and externally, develop innovative solutions, and ensure sound and timely progress of the work. You will also be in charge of the corresponding patent portfolio to leverage our key innovations. Projects will focus on developing breakthrough processes and products related to Saint-Gobain PCR’s present and future markets, thereby providing our customers with solutions to decarbonize industry and enable industrial sustainability.

ROLE SUMMARY

As R&D Manager, you will be expected to effectively lead cross functional teams by managing others to execute and deliver project objectives. You will also lead R&D projects in the areas of process improvement and product development with a focus on applications where ceramic and refractory solutions can improve the sustainability of industrial processes. In this role, you will collaborate with R&D colleagues, product managers, product engineers, application engineers, external partners, and customers. You will also create and execute project plans, design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and present findings in written and oral formats. You will also propose projects and programs and contribute to the management of the R&D project portfolio. You will be responsible for developing direct reports and others within the group. Other skills include:

  • Utilizes broad technical background and experience to develop and/or improve products, processes, and performance and/or reduce costs within a major product area.
  • Stays aware of new technology applications and competitive uses of same in work with materials, products and processes, and in development of new knowledge and applies this to personal research/ products.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop, communicate and implement medium to long term vision for portfolio, and ensure portfolio evolution and rejuvenation
  • Act as main PCR technical point of contact with key customers
  • Demonstrates open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility.
  • Seeks out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
  • Proposes support and expertise from the team to the other business functions engaged in business projects.
  • Able to communicate technically with colleagues, university collaborators, and customers utilizing knowledge to advance projects and identify productive synergies.
  • Develops the PCR team members and yourself to the fullest potential.
  • Submits proposals and takes decision on IP in agreement with upper management and business
  • Is seen as a technical leader by others.
  • Understands Stage-Gate Process methodology/ideology and utilizes and incorporates it in research projects
  • Able to fill in standard deliverables for project management through interactions with internal contacts outside of R&D
  • Holds team and group accountable for following relevant methodology for any projects his / her R&D group is responsible

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 18+ years’ experience, or MS with 13+ years of experience, or PhD with 9+ years in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering or other related disciplines.
