Senior Research Engineer II – Organic Grinding Wheels

Saint-Gobain Research North America is looking for a driven, talented, and energetic research engineer to join our growing Organic Grinding Wheels Technology team. Saint-Gobain Abrasives is the world’s leading manufacturer of abrasives, offering powerful, precise and user friendly solutions enabling customers to shape and surface-finish all types of materials even in the most complex and challenging applications across a diverse range of markets. We are searching for an experienced, hands-on project leader to investigate, research, and develop new technologies that strengthen our offerings. The new team member will have the opportunity to leverage their engineering and materials expertise by leading their process and product development projects from the initial stages of conceptualization, prototyping and experimental testing, to the implementation in manufacturing.

ROLE SUMMARY

The selected candidate will be expected to lead R&D projects through effective collaboration with R&D colleagues, commercial team members, application engineers, external customers, and external suppliers. The candidate will create and execute project plans, design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and present findings in written and oral formats.  Candidate is also expected to play a role in proposing projects and programs vital to the R&D direction of the group.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Use of broad technical background and experience to develop and/or improve products, processes, and performance and/or reduce costs within a major product area.
• Stays aware of new Abrasive technology applications and competitive uses of same in work with materials, products and processes, and in development of new knowledge.
• Projects management from inception to scale-up and industrialization. Manages multiple projects simultaneously, on time, & well documented. Is able to balance creativity with process and documentation.
• Cultivate an internal network and an external network of development partners to rapidly advance project goals
• Develop open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility. Seeks out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
• Clearly and concisely communicate research approaches and results
• Give input on strategic goals for Organic Grinding Wheels development
• Coach and train technicians and junior team members

COMPETENCIES:

• Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to: demonstrated success in developing innovative technologies, materials, or products, familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation.  
• Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to work effectively in global, cross-functional teams
• Excellent troubleshooting, teamwork, oral and written communication skills and strategic development skills
• Self-directed, motivated, and hands-on personality. Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly interdisciplinary work environment
• Demonstrate adequate knowledge in HSE.

Required Qualifications

• BS Degree with a minimum of 12+ years’ experience, or MS with 7+ years of experience, or PhD with 3+ years in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer or related discipline with industrial R&D experience in performance optimization or new product/process development.

• R&D experience in formulation, characterization, and processing of composite materials in industrial environment is a plus.
