CertainTeed is seeking a Research Engineer to help improve the sustainability and performance of homes and buildings through research, design, and development of new materials and process technologies. This position will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of experts in building physics, engineering, and architecture that focuses on new product development, and specializes in new markets, advanced materials, and new construction techniques. The position utilizes engineering, science, and technology to validate and optimize the engineering performance of initial designs and prototypes, to explore successful paths to industrialization, and to iterate on new ideas. Solutions will employ a wide variety of scientific, material, technological, and manufacturing expertise in collaboration with Saint-Gobain’s global, cross-industry community, including our sister R&D facilities in France, Spain, Germany, China, India, and Brazil.

The position is located at Saint-Gobain Research North America in Northborough, MA. To develop better understanding of our industrial processes and the end-users, up to 20% travel, including international, would be required to job sites, factories, and to other Saint-Gobain / CertainTeed locations (subject to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions).


Job specific responsibilities include:

  • Lab management of to ensure safe, productive, and comfortable working conditions
  • Development of custom application test methods
  • Lab scale process development and prototype making
  • Managing our lab inventory of building materials
  • Shipping and receiving, including packing and crating
  • Development and document standard operation procedures and memos of change
  • Managing equipment and processes, including training other technicians and engineers
  • Working with our Solutions Development team to identify production scale processes for minimum viable products and to provide design for manufacturing guidance
  • Visiting and coordinating with both internal and external manufacturing plants to scale-up production and optimize processes for quality and sustainability

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Chemical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering
  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to: demonstration of familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation.
  • Project leadership including project management, team collaboration, and oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge in HSE.
  • Incumbent demonstrates ability to work with colleagues at various levels.
  • Develop understanding of company policies and corporate structure.
  • Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment required.
