Senior Research Engineer - CertainTeed – Systems & Physics

Job Summary

Saint-Gobain Research North America is looking for a collaborative, talented, and energetic research engineer to join our growing CertainTeed R&D team. Saint-Gobain is a world leader in developing innovative, high-performance solutions for the Building industry through our unparalleled expertise in materials, design and optimization. We are searching for a scientist to research and develop new technologies that strengthen our solution portfolio, which encompasses Offsite construction, roofing, solar, siding, insulation, and interior finishing products enabling Saint-Gobain to strongly impact how we will be building in the future. The new team member will have the opportunity to leverage their skillset in applied mechanics and computational analysis by contributing to a dynamic research team focusing on delivering new solutions to customer (both physical products and digital services) relying on system modeling, multi-physics, and distributed numerical tools for engineering design.

The selected candidate will be expected to support R&D projects as part of a collaborative research team leading specific work packages to progressively steering entire programs. The team must interface effectively with designers, architects, contractors, commercial team members, and manufacturing/process engineers in order for the business to expand its potential. The candidate will especially play a key role in interaction with the different product portfolio leaders to identify the solutions – digital or physical – that would deliver value to our customers (home owners, distributors, contractors, architects…).

The candidate will need to:

  • Be able to balance creativity with process and documentation.
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary agile development team working on multiple projects simultaneously (with team members having background in Design, Architecture, Mechanics, Building Science, Physics, Material science…).
  • Extensively utilize broad expertise in solid/structural/computational physics to develop numerical tools and physical prototypes to accelerate product development and empower commercialization.
  • Develop engineering code (python preferred) and leverage simulation tools to optimize Construction solutions and propose innovative design ideas.
  • Seek out feedback from others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
  • Communicate with internal and external collaborators and utilize knowledge to advance projects and identify productive synergies.
  • Stay aware of new technology applications within the Building industry as well as modern academic methodologies and literature.

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree with 7+ years of experience, MS Degree with 3+ years of experience, or an entry level PhD in Applied Physics, or Applied Mathematics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering/Applied Mechanics, Material Science.
  • Strong background in Finite Element Analysis (FEA - Abaqus preferred)
  • Coding experience (Python preferred).
  • Interest in machine learning / heuristics, optimization, dimension reduction techniques, and data visualization.
  • Experience in numerical workflow development (e.g., multi-step analyses, experimental data management).
  • Openness to learning applied physics, heat and mass transfer, optics, computational graphics and fluid-structure interaction simulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and actively seek out feedback from others.
  • Strong communication skills and the desire to advance projects and propose new productive synergies.
