Position Description

Job Summary

CertainTeed Roofing R&D is seeking a driven, talented, and energetic experienced polymer material scientist to join the roofing team. This position is part of the polymer material research group, focusing on providing sustainable solutions to the polymer modified asphalt and polymer composite techniques for roofing applications. The position will be responsible for conducting leading edge research and development by integrating strong polymer science and material characterization fundamentals to shingle product performance. The position performs duties as a project technical expert to implement process improvements and share best practices at all roofing plants to support the fast growth of CertainTeed Roofing business.

The position will be located at the Saint Gobain Research Center in Northboro MA. Under the direction of the principle investigator, the candidate will take project objectives and transform them into actionable tasks including research of technologies, design and execution of experiments, analysis of results, and generation of IP and technical reports. A successful candidate will have a focus on research and development of novel products using polymers with green chemistry, bio-base or recycled to provide innovative and sustainable solutions for the next generation of shingle products. This will highly contribute to support Saint Gobain’s carbon emission strategy. Thereby, a wide knowledge in the structure-property relationships of polymer materials and experiences in polymer processing, such as blending, compounding, extrusion and molding, are required for this position. Experience with asphalt materials, knowledge of adhesives and coatings, and understanding of building code are preferred. Experience in characterization of polymer and blends, and familiar with analytical tools including FTIR, DSC, TGA, rheology and chromatography are desired.

Responsibilities

  • Hold self to the highest safety standards and commit to building a solid safety culture in all laboratory and related activities.
  • Serve as project leader in new product development for polymer composite or polymer modified asphalt shingles.
  • Serve as resource for sustainable solutions for roofing products.
  • Source and evaluate suppliers for materials with lower carbon emission.
  • Conduct raw material evaluation for polymer, resin, wax, anti-oxidant, UV stabilizer and other composites.
  • Design experiment by utilizing statistical tools.
  • Conduct lab-scale formulation for polymer modified asphalt and polymer composite using mixing and compounding equipment. Assist the purchase of equipment for scale up.
  • Evaluate physical properties and mechanical properties complied with code requirements for new formulations and roofing products.
  • Characterize polymer microstructure and macroscopic properties by using spectroscopy, thermal and rheological techniques, such as FTIR, DSC, TGA and Rheology. Generate test report and utilize the results to optimize formula and process.
  • Serve as expert in polymer science. Provide formulation optimization customized for each shingle plant, and support all plants to improve the quality control plan and the raw material management.  
  • Responsible for equipment purchases, supervision of project team and compilation of results and recommendations. Held accountable to project budget, timeline and deliverables. Achieves substantial cost savings for the business.
  • Work with Saint-Gobain Research North American Center (SGR-NA), CertainTeed Roofing Engineering, and other R&D resources within Saint-Gobain (SG) to identify and develop practical concepts and solutions for roofing applications.
  • Develop and encourage innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) development and foster IP development through the patent process with legal support. 

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD plus demonstrated technical judgement/accomplishments is in Polymer Science Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other similar fields.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: Polymer compounding, Composite materials, Polymer physics, Asphalt materials and interfacial science.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and team collaboration.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate in a clear, effective and respectful way to all levels in a global organization.
  • Confident, independently-motivated self-starter.
