Research Engineer - CT Platforms

Position Description

Job Summary

CertainTeed is seeking a Research Engineer to help improve the sustainability and performance of homes and buildings through research, design, and development of new materials and process technologies. CertainTeed is a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain where we bring well-being to people by creating great living spaces and improving daily life. You’ll find us wherever people live, work, play, move and heal. Innovative building and construction materials are keys to our sustainable future on the planet earth, and you can have a tangible impact on how this is achieved.

This position will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of experts in building physics, engineering, and architecture that focuses on new product development, and specializes in new markets, advanced materials, and new construction techniques. The position utilizes engineering, science, and technology to validate and optimize the engineering performance of initial designs and prototypes, to get products in front of customers quickly, to explore successful paths to industrialization, and to iterate on new ideas. Solutions will employ a wide variety of scientific, material, technological, and manufacturing expertise in collaboration with Saint-Gobain’s global, cross-industry community, including our sister R&D facilities in France, Spain, Germany, China, India, and Brazil.

The position is located at Saint-Gobain Research North America in Northborough, MA. To develop better understanding of our industrial processes and the end-users, up to 20% travel, including international, would be required to job sites, factories, and to other Saint-Gobain / CertainTeed locations (subject to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions).

We are looking for the following qualities in a teammate:

  • Entrepreneurial: We care about whether our projects make a positive impact on the performance and sustainability of buildings and construction.
  • Maker mentality: We make a lot of prototypes because they help us prove our ideas don’t work, freeing us to quickly move on to new ones. We work back-and-forth between computer aided engineering and physical prototyping, building what we need to test a new idea.
  • Perceptive creativity: We work on complex and under defined problems. We perceptively approach problems and use a combination of experimentation, literature review, and simulation to identify the important influencers and come up with creative solutions.
  • Community minded: We collaborate with our company peers, external partners, and customers, embracing open innovation.

Why you will like this role and this company:

This role combines the agile, close-to-customer, move-fast ethos of a startup with the resources and intellectual support structure of a large, established, and highly respected company. You’ll be part of a small team that collaborates with experts from nearly every field of engineering, science, and design.  Finally, Saint-Gobain is a company that demonstrably cares about and actively promotes the career development and well-being of its team. This position enables substantial growth opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree in physics, chemistry, material science, engineering or other related disciplines.
  • Project leadership including project management, team collaboration, and oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Experience or interest in architecture, buildings, and/or construction is strongly preferred.
  • Experience or interest in design for automation and design for manufacturing is desirable.
