Research Technician - Coated Abrasives

Position Description

Job Summary

The Research Technician safely performs technical functions involving testing, analyzing, improving, installing, operating, and/or solving problems concerning processes, equipment and products.The selected candidate will be joining the Coated Abrasives R&D group in a position based in Northboro (MA, USA).

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports engineers and scientists in the Coated Abrasives’ R&D team with their projects.
  • Executes and/or supports commercial and manufacturing support requests.
  • Manages and documents projects and tasks effectively with supervision.
  • Plays contributing role in lab management: safety, equipment maintenance, 5S, lab audit preparation and action follow-up, lab postings, regular equipment checks etc.
  • Demonstrates open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility.
  • Conducts hands-on experimental work with documentation as appropriate.
  • Prepares/processes materials samples including:
    - Active involvement in standard and exploratory experiment design,
    - Routine laboratory activity to make or prep materials and test samples,
    - Development work with non-routine R&D assignments such as design of fixtures for experimental set-up and establishing proper data acquisition.
  • Collects, analyzes and reports scientific and engineering data obtained from laboratory equipment through an effective plan/coordination. 
  • Maintain laboratories and equipment including set-up, operation and trouble shooting of experimental equipment or instruments, raw materials inventory and 5S.  Leads troubleshooting initiatives and machine repair efforts.  Interacts with facilities and outside contractors for machine and equipment repairs.
  • Other duties within the department as assigned including ordering and receiving raw materials and participation in regular onsite safety meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED (demonstrated equivalent) or Associates degree in engineering, technical, or science-related field (preferred) 
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with reporting software such as Microsoft word and excel
  • Demonstrated hands-on experimental work history
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety operations
  • Ability to work with a diverse project team in an open and collaborative mode
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
