What’s the job?

CertainTeed Gypsum is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to lead and manage all plant engineering activities for the Proctor, WV. The Mechanical Engineer reports to the Engineering & Maintenance Manager and is responsible for the maintenance and upgrade of the grounds, building, and operational equipment on site. They will also plan and direct engineering activities, provide security to and improvement of equipment and process, and maintain the company's commitment to safety by providing a workplace free from recognized hazards that meets specific safety and health standards put forth by OSHA, and other state / federal organizations. Long-term, mid-term, and daily planning are key aspects of the position's responsibilities.

  • Plan, schedule, & direct all plant engineering functions and coordinate utility projects.
  • Develop capital cost, design, and installation plans for new equipment. Recommend equipment replacement to improve operations & reduce costs and participate in decisions pertaining to equipment requirements for line uptime.
  • Secure required permits from governmental agencies for new equipment installations.
  • Implement approved capital programs within budget and schedule plans.
  • Participate in Equipment Safety Inspections and in the company SMAT program.
  • Responsible for administration of plant projects and CapEx.
  • Support continuous improvement projects and teams to drive rapid results. Interact with site Senior Management to drive improvements.
  • Record, report, and post targeted areas of improvement opportunities using visual management boards.
  • Will I be traveling? Not a lot, probably about 5% to other plant sites in the business.
  • Our state-of-the-art Proctor Gypsum plant uses environmentally friendly synthetic gypsum that is produced as a byproduct of the chemical scrubbers that remove sulfur from the coal-fired power plant that operates across the street from our plant.
  • We manufacture several different types of gypsum wallboard at our facility which is sold all over the United States and Canada to contractors, businesses, big box stores so that it can be used for both new construction and remodels.
  • We are located near the Ohio River just outside Moundsville, WV. This suburb of Wheeling is a growing family based community nestled in the northern panhandle of scenic West Virginia.

What do you bring?

  • You love to problem solve and thrive in a team based culture.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in mechanical engineering in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to understand operational excellence principles and tools, such as WCM, 5S, SMED, Kaizen, Six Sigma green belt, and TPM.
  • Strong computer skills, excellent time management, analytical, flexible in adapting to changing situations and business conditions.
  • CAD or AutoCAD skills and or working knowledge of process engineering software and SAP.
  • Ability to diagnose and prioritize opportunities in areas of savings, throughput improvement, and yield improvement.
  • The ability to design experiments and provide statistical analysis of those trials as to effectiveness would be a plus.
