The Saint-Gobain Orange, CT Plant is looking for a Tool Room Supervisor

The primary responsibility of a Tool Room Supervisor is to technically support, implement, and improve the tool room's processes and procedures while consistently assuring the smooth operation of the tool room's main functions of primarily providing prototype and new tool build for new product development, and supporting production tools.  Other duties include specifying new tooling or capital equipment, and collaborating with Engineering Services team when needed.

Essential Functions

  • Directs and coordinates the activities of the Tool Room scheduling/work load prioritization for prototype and production tool new builds. Provides direct supervision, training and support of tool makers and Tooling Design Engineer.
  • Assists Application Development Engineers with new tool quotes, supplies internal tool build quotes, and works with US based tool sources for new and repair services
  • Investigates and introduces new technologies applicable to Tool Room, application engineering, and automation for manufacturing.
  • Provides production support by prioritizing and assigning repair and maintenance of production tools, maintaining MQ1 Tooling Module for work orders and reporting; set standards for all tooling needs in collaboration with manufacturing and application development engineering.
  • Quotes and places work for outsourced activities including jig grinding, wire EDM, heat treat, special machining services, and core pins/mold components.
  • Ensures shop equipment capabilities and operation through the development and implementation of a preventative maintenance program for all shop equipment, calibration of CNC equipment, and scheduling of outside service when needed.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Manufacturing Engineering or related technical field. 7+ years in Manufacturing Tooling Department leading/supervising employees will be considered in lieu of degree.

Work Experience

  • Ten years work experience as Manufacturing Engineer, Project Engineer, or Application Development Engineer in an industrial environment is preferred.
  • Three to five years’ experience in a supervisory or management position is required.
  • Thorough understanding of technology and procedures required of tool making process is required.

Practical/Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of CAD/CAM systems and methods of modeling and tooling techniques. 
  • Understanding of machine design and jigs/fixtures to aid in manufacturing.
  • Understanding of validation techniques including DOE, OQ, PQ and similar methods.
  • Understanding of tooling methods and machinery required to build injection/transfer molds
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people for both the tool room and design department.
  • Strong ability to lead and redirect individuals or groups. Wide range of background and education differences between individuals. 
  • Strong ability to digest challenging applications and determine best possible solution or to present multiple options to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Ability to handle priorities from competing aspects of plant and development group.
  • Ability to come up with creative solutions, sometimes using untried or new technologies and techniques.
