Senior Research Chemist - Coating Formulation and Application Expert

Position Description

Job Summary

The Coatings Expert will be responsible for developing a formulation strategy based on current and future Architectural technologies that will optimize product margins, provide differentiated performance, and provide raw material supply security across all coating and adhesive developments, primarily in water-based technologies, but furthering into other chemistries such as UV cure. This individual will work with Operations to understand current capabilities and propose upgrades that will improve efficiency, reduce waste, and allow implementation of processes to further innovation across all segments of the Architectural business: Panels, Specialties, and Suspension System segments.

 

Project leadership and execution – 35%

  • Ownership of a multi-project portfolio across all relevant business sub-segments
  • Responsibility for planning, resourcing, executing, and communicating on all segments
  • Decision making and proposing recommendations to the business or functions based on strategic fit
  • Lead and/or be part of cross-functional teams
  • Lead relevant stages of Stage Gate process

 

Coatings / Adhesives Review and Needs Assessment – 35%

  • Running analyses of all current coatings and adhesives formulations (internal or external sourced) that are used across all segments in Architectural
  • Determining where opportunities exist for performance, margin, and/or raw material supply security improvements; achieving significant cost reduction while minimizing waste and allowing for improved production yield
  • Establishing a phased plan to execute projects stemming from the analysis

 

Scouting/skunkworks – 15%

  • Finding new ideas and technological approaches and efficiently screening them for potential relevance to business/market needs
  • Working with the Product Management group to understand and tie together the market needs of our business with state of the art approaches to formulating coatings, ultimately developing new and novel finished good performance

 

Documentation – 10%

  • Maintain technical literature and databases of testing reports
  • Ensure knowledge is archived as projects progress and complete

 

Personnel Management – 5%

  • Responsible for performance and development of one direct report in 2021, with planned addition(s) in 2022 and beyond

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. + 3 years’ relevant industry experience, or M.S. + 7 years’ relevant industry experience, or B.S. + 12 years’ relevant industry experience in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or other relevant degree required
  • A minimum of 5 years Waterborne Coating formulation development, with a proven track record of bringing new formulations to the market
  • Proven track record of Coating Application Process Knowledge required
  • People leadership - Past experience leading individuals and small teams required
  • Proficient in use of DOE
  • Project leadership skills; Stage-Gate project management process required
  • Clear written and verbal (live and virtual) communication skills
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams
  • Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time to various manufacturing plants in the US and Canada
