Job Summary

CertainTeed is looking for driven, talented, and energetic researchers to join our current team in conducting hands-on laboratory experiments for key development programs. Projects will focus on process and product development activities related to CertainTeed Gypsum’s extensive product line. As a Process Research Engineer, the candidate will research and develop new technologies to improve processes and products within our business.  Phases of development include pilot, scale-up, and implementation of R&D processes and new products into manufacturing. The candidate will take project objectives and transform them in to actionable tasks including research of technologies, design and execution of experimentation, analysis of results, and generation of IP and technical reports.

This position will have a focus on research and development in all aspects of the group’s technical area and new product development, thereby building technical depth in multiple areas. Under the direction of the R&D Manager, the candidate will also design, run experiments, produce lab scale samples, operate pilot equipment, and analyze the experimental outcomes. In addition to designing experiments for the candidate’s primary projects, the candidate will be expected to conduct experiments to support projects led by others.

Responsibilities:

  • Reports directly to the R&D Manager- Process Technology.
  • Analyzes process variations; develops solutions and implements corrective actions by using advanced statistical tools in identifying and resolving the root causes of the variations in the process, and participates in resolving critical process and product problems with customers and vendors.
  • Responsibilities include designing / developing of new process systems, revising existing processes, and developing and coordinating the implementation of projects, which contribute substantially to plant profitability.
  • Provides technical expertise and support to employees, vendors and suppliers for manufacturing process related projects.
  • Coordinates and leads changes in the production process.
  • As primary project leader, provides technical direction to designers, contractors and employees of associated projects.
  • Utilizes statistical methodologies and Total Quality Management (TQM) tools for establishing, maintaining and administering tests and inspection procedures while controlling and documenting changes in specifications.
  • Participates in the investigation and assessment of customer quality complaints.
  • Interacts with Team for operational trouble-shooting, process improvement projects, production materials requirement, raw material availability and Quality Step Zero requirements.
  • Compiles technical data and other background information to determine equipment performance specifications and established baselines.  Interprets and extrapolates accumulated data to prepare diagrams and flow charts for the efficient operation of the equipment.
  • Ensure CertainTeed Gypsum’s standards of safety, quality and reliability are built into process and equipment solutions utilizing WCM principles.

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience, or an MS degree with 3+ years of experience, or a PhD entry level candidate; Degree area must be Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, or other related disciplines.
  • Expertise in gypsum process and industry.
  • Comprehension of product formulation, water and foam chemistries, mass & energy balance, flow diagrams, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), fluid properties and thermodynamics.
  • Working knowledge of advanced statistical tools used to reduce variations.
  • Flexible, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving capabilities to work effectively in corporate, manufacturing and team environments.
  • Ability to provide leadership and innovation at all levels of the organization.
