Assist the Worcester (Greendale) complex with compliance with Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) regulations. Assist in managing hazardous waste generation and wastewater discharges from all businesses. Respond to emergency situations as required to offer expertise and assistance as needed. Represent the Greendale EHS department in the absence of the Environmental Manager or Senior Environmental Engineer. Manage WCM Environmental pillar as assigned.
At the direction of the Environmental Manager, develop training programs that support both the Worcester and regional needs of the business. Deliver group specific safety or environmental training.
Assist with addressing issues resulting from WCM audits, compliance or Integrated System Audits (ISA). Become trained and conduct ISAs at 3 other locations per year.
Work with the businesses to compile data and complete environmental or safety reports as required, including hazardous waste, wastewater, various other reports to government regulatory agencies or to Saint-Gobain’s internal database (GAIA) as required or directed by the Environmental Manager or Worcester complex Sr. Environmental Engineer.
Supervise consultants and contractors for environmental matters, including quarterly sampling of wastewater and surface water at the Worcester complex or remediation activities. As needed collect samples of rainwater during storm events per permit requirements at the Worcester complex. Conduct sampling as necessary to respond to environmental incidents.
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, or Safety. Other degrees in sciences may be considered if combined with direct EHS experience. Must be competent in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 2 years of EHS experience is preferred.
This position is split between the NA EHS Department and the Worcester, MA complex, who will work together to direct the activities of this position.
Duties / Responsibilities
- Complete specific projects as assigned by the Environmental Manager or the Worcester complex Sr. Environmental Engineer. Attend required training and conduct three ISAs per year. Manage Environmental Pillar as assigned.
- Compile reports, update data bases, collect information needed to complete submissions to SG or regulatory agencies. File and organize data and documents as needed.
- Coordinate with consultants or contractors as needed and meet with regulators or inspectors as needed.
- Conduct water or waste sampling, Conduct safety and environmental inspections as needed.
- Assist in helping to organize specific EHS activities, i.e., International EHS Day or other events.
Be able to respond to emergency situations and provide the necessary advice to protect human health and the environment. Must develop a comprehensive understanding of safety and environmental regulations, and apply that knowledge as necessary to determine compliance status in any given situation. This includes federal, state and local, as well as requirements that are specific to Saint-Gobain. Use their knowledge of the regulations and also have the ability to research EHS issues as they arise. The person must be able to discern if a given situation complies with a program or regulatory requirement, or SG standard, and if not, propose a solution to bring the facility or company into compliance.
Ability to traverse all areas of the Worcester campus, including climbing stairs and ladders as necessary. Travel to sites in NA to assist the EHS NA Delegation and conduct 20 step audits is also required.
Primarily, this is an office position but the individual will spend up to 33% of their time in various locations indoors or outdoors (in the plants) on the Worcester campus and other nearby SG facilities.
