Job Summary

Saint-Gobain Research (SGR) North America is looking for a driven, talented, and experienced researcher to join our growing Life Sciences team. Saint-Gobain is a world leader in developing innovative, high-performance solutions through our exceptional experience in materials science and processing. We are searching for an experienced, hands-on leader to investigate, research, and develop new technologies that strengthen our molding competencies and participate in formulating strategy for future research.

As a Principal Scientist, the selected candidate will be expected to effectively lead R&D projects, focused on molding technologies, through effective collaboration with R&D colleagues, commercial team members, application engineers, external customers, and external suppliers. The candidate will create and execute project plans, design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and present findings in written and oral formats. Candidate is also expected to utilize one’s experience and technical research to play a role in proposing projects and programs vital to the Life Science’s R&D direction within silicone molding. Further the candidate with be responsible for developing direct reports and others within group.

The main job duties will include:

  • Utilizes strong technical background and experience to develop and/or improve products, processes, and performance and/or reduce costs within areas of injection molding; specifically, areas of silicone, plastic, micro, and multi-material molding as well as secondary operations.

  • Stays aware of new technology applications and competitive uses of technology in work with materials, products and processes. Utilizes this knowledge to play a role in proposing projects and programs vital to the Life Sciences business direction within silicone molding

  • Demonstrates open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility. Seeks out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.

  • Excellent communicator who is able to communicate technically with internal competencies, university collaborators, suppliers, and customers and utilize knowledge to find solutions, advance projects, and identify productive synergies.

  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget to meet business and customer objectives.   

  • Understands Gate methodology and change/design control methodology and holds team and group accountable for following methodologies for any projects within responsibility

  • The incumbent is familiar with patent activities in his/her area of expertise and develops patentable concepts.

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to: demonstration of hands-on new process development, tooling, automation, etc. for silicone and plastic molding, familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation, IP, Patents, and technical documents.  

  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects within a structured process (Gate).

  • Demonstrated ability to give and receive constructive feedback. 

  • Demonstrate ability to network within and out of group.

  • Demonstrated aptitude to quickly understand new concepts and technology and apply them.

  • Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment required.

  • Demonstrate understanding of company policies


Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 15+ years’ experience, or MS with 10+ years of experience, or PhD with 6+ years in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, or other related disciplines.

  • Experience with Silicone and Plastic Injection Molding; processing and tooling equipment/design, Micro-Injection and Tooling preferred
